Abattoir's Concert Hunt - Alestorm (Live In Zagreb, 15.11.2023)

In general, the year 2023 hasn’t been rich with concert attending for me due to different reasons, especially this autumn, even though there were quite a few tempting gigs occurring nearby. After letting a few of them go by, I decided to attend, a bit surprising I guess, none other than the mighty pirate drinkers Alestorm. The Scots performed through Europe for more than a month, with support for this particular show coming from Italians Elvenking; the latter were appearing just on a few shows during the tour. Of course, both are well-known bands, albeit with discographies that I have never paid much attention to except out of curiosity on certain occasions, such as new album releases. However, I’m well aware that Alestorm can put on a one hell of a show, and that was also the main reason for checking out this gig.

Damnation Festival 2023

Musclassia: Damnation Festival is the UK’s most prominent late-year metal festival; since 2005, extreme metal juggernauts have been appearing on Northern stages as part of the festival. Initially started in Manchester, it soon moved to the Student Union of the University of Leeds for 15 years, before returning to Manchester in 2022 at the Bowlers Exhibition Centre (BEC) Arena. I was in attendance to watch the festival’s final edition in Leeds, while Omne Metallum was there for their return to Manchester last year. This time, both of us followed the long road north (well, more of a train ride) to enjoy the most extravagant Damnation weekend yet.

Thrash 'Til Death: Destruction - 24.10.2023, London, UK

As winter starts to draw near, it's often a time that people become sullen and forlorn at the nights drawing in early and generally poorer weather. For metalheads, winter is a time to look forward to; with summer festival season in the rearview mirror once more, winter tours start ramping up in their place. Tonight was one such tour that I knew I had to be in attendance for way back when it was announced, to not only celebrate the lengthy career of one of the best bands to come out of Germany, but also enjoy what had to be one of the most stacked line-ups I’d witnessed in a while.

Bloodstock 2023

It feels like it was only yesterday that I was dragging myself home from Sunstock 2022, the relief of no longer existing in what felt like an oven outweighing any post-festival blues, yet the highlight of my musical calendar came around again in quick fashion. After last year's heatwave-meets-heavy music experience, the news of what had occurred at Wacken and Metal Days in recent weeks meant I found myself nervous and having to prepare for a variety of situations (flip-flops or wellies: why not take both and break your back on the way carrying it all into the festival?).

Rockstadt Extreme Festival 2023

I have a bit of an on and off relationship with Rockstadt Extreme Festival, especially when compared with other festivals in Romania that I have attended as many editions as possible, like ArtMania or Dark Bombastic Evening. Not always affording the expenses and the vacation days, plus how inconvenient and exhausting it can get, it was Rockstadt that has previously been the one festival I would drop out of the possible options. I first attended in 2015, went yearly for a while, missed out in 2018 (even if I'll forever regret missing Converge), and went again in 2019, and at that time I also got media creds (but not photo ones, admittedly understandably so), and then 2020 rolled around and we all know what happened. The 2022 edition, though somewhat comparable to this year's, was ultimately one I also dropped, even if names like Blind Guardian and Lamb Of God were pretty enticing.

Abattoir's Concert Hunt - Arch Enemy (Live In Zagreb, 21.06.2023)

As part of the variegated summer festival touring, Arch Enemy are one of many bands that filled the “in-between” days with a moderate portion of club shows. The (almost) half-Swedish band played in front of a 1000-head crowd, packed inside a steamy, sauna-like venue that is based in the middle of the main Croatian city. Executing this on the first day of summer suitably brought additional heat throughout the whole place. At the end of this show, I could simply wring liters of sweat from my soaked shirt.

Tech-Fest

Summer festival season is once more upon us, perhaps the best time of year for audiophiles who love their live music. My summer season is kicking off with a return to Tech-Fest, a festival that's been going for ten years now; returning after my first experience last year, this would be my second consecutive festival. With the news that this year was to be the final edition of the festival, and with one hell of a heavy line-up, I decided I had to be there one more time to make the most of one of the more unique metal events in the UK.

Abattoir's Concert Hunt - Testament, Voivod (Live In Ljubljana, 02.06.2023)

When it was announced at the beginning of this year, I signed up for this veteran package early on and bought the ticket soon after. The possibility to see Exodus live after so many years swayed this decision. Of course it’s always cool to see Testament with their classic line-up: Peterson, Skolnick, and Chuck Billy at the forefront. And to complete this veteran, 120-year-old bill, Canadian stalwarts Voivod joined as well.

Post-metal as a genre has been evolving steadily throughout the last two decades with high-quality and diverse releases, justifiably becoming one of the vital branches on the "metal music tree". To form this unbreakable and stable backbone of the genre, we can undoubtedly be grateful for the essential contributions of bands like Cult Of Luna and Russian Circles. And having these two ensembles on the same touring bill? Well, for me it was almost a necessity not to miss these acts that are driving forces of the genre.

Incineration Festival 2023

Once again Incineration Festival returns to London, confirming that the Earth has once more completed its orbit of that big burning thing in the sky (I confess, I am a fan of that heliocentric idea). The premier extreme metal festival in the country, Incineration Festival has gone from strength to strength over the years, earning its reputation with well-organised line-ups of high-quality metal. For the second weekend in a row, I found myself in familiar surroundings, having only been in Camden last weekend for Desertfest.
