    Getting Into: Skyclad

Skyclad formed in 1990 by Martin Walkyier (then ex-Sabbat, now again a member) and guitarist Steve Ramsey (Satan, ex-Pariah), with the goal of creating the “ultimate pagan metal band”. Of course, pagan metal now means something quite different, but here is ostensibly where it all began. The band name itself is a term from the Wicca religion, meaning “clad in the sky”, i.e. ritual nudity, and at the beginning, their themes revolved a lot about pagan traditions, while becoming more overtly political as time went by.

Nile - Vile Nilotic Rites Europe Tour 2023, 14.04.2023, Umeå, Sweden

The last six months, Umeå has been spoiled with great metal of all sorts. In November, we had Mgła, Ulcerate and Sisyphean visiting. In December, it was Northern Rockfest with Clawfinger, Evergrey and Scar Symmetry to name a few. In February, Skraeckoedlan did a pub gig, and in March there was the Outbreak Festival with Ereb Altor headlining. Last weekend, Meshuggah, The Halo Effect, Orbit Culture and Scar Symmetry did a show that you can read about here, and this weekend might be the most hectic one. This review will cover Nile's Friday show. Saturday offers Hammerfall (which I won't be attending) and on Sunday the legendary W.A.S.P. will take the stage (which I will be attending). In other words, Umeå is a pretty great place, although way up in the north of Sweden, to experience great metal live.

Meshuggah - Immutable Tour 2023, 07.04.2023, Umeå, Sweden

Meshuggah has embarked on a tour through Sweden and Norway, and I had the joy of attending the show in both my own and Meshuggah's hometown, Umeå. As support, they had a trio of excellent Swedish bands consisting of Scar Symmetry, Orbit Culture and The Halo Effect. Coincidentally, this show took place on Good Friday, and good it was indeed.

MS Awards 2022 - Staff Picks!!

The final event of the MSA season is here: the staff picks, the winners of each category chosen by the collective staff members of Metal Storm. You will not find a more correct summation of 2022 in metal, save for the personal ratings of your editor-in-chief. As with the public awards, the staff-picking process saw a few obvious winners ride in on a landslide, but a fair few of these went to tie-breaks in overtime; we, too, have our fierce competitions behind the scenes, and there was a lot of great stuff to choose from, as always.

E-an-na - Alveolar Release Party, Bucharest, Romania, 16.03.2023

The release of E-an-na's new album is something that was quite anticipated, even if, at this point, Alveolar feels like a compilation considering how many of the tracks were made available in advance. I mean, just look at how many news I had to add of each newly released song, and I even missed a couple of them. But even so, it was exciting to see E-an-na continue with their own brand of folk metal after two detour EPs. A detour that was quite wild for E-an-na, complete with trying to qualify for Eurovision, winning the popular vote but being dismissed by the juries, getting banned from venues for detouring from rock music with taboo music genres. By that I mean the Balkan folk/pop inspired EP, not the tango one that no one but me and SSUS talk about. You can hear more about it in my interview with the band.
